Preventive Dentistry

A healthy, confident smile radiates and inspires you to be your true, uninhibited self. Your smile helps you shine your brightest! At Cobb Family Dentistry, we believe that preventive care is the best approach to maintaining excellent oral health and a stunning smile.

Practicing excellent oral hygiene is essential for maintaining a healthy, beautiful smile—especially if you want sparkling, problem-free teeth. Preventive dental care includes:

  • Brushing and flossing daily.
  • Eating nutritious meals.
  • Visiting your dentist for routine dental exams and cleanings.

What to Expect at Your Dental Exam and Cleaning

At Cobb Family Dentistry, we are always pleased to welcome new patients to our dental family. Our new patient exams are two hours, as this is the time we get to know you, learn about your oral health needs, and discuss your smile goals.

We perform a comprehensive oral health exam during this appointment, including necessary digital x-rays, intraoral scans, and panoramic x-rays. This allows us to collect a base of knowledge about your oral health status and gives us a view of your mouth’s unique anatomy and any underlying concerns.

After the exam, we clean your teeth by removing plaque and tartar buildup from tooth surfaces and between the teeth. Finally, we polish your pearly whites and send you on your way with a fresher, cleaner grin.

When the hygienist finishes the cleaning, Dr. Popple will review possible improvements you can make to your oral hygiene routine. He will also share with you if he found any cavities, signs of gum disease, or any other issues. Together, we will create a personalized treatment plan for your unique oral health needs and smile goals so you can have a healthy, beautiful smile for life.

Fluoride Fights Cavities

Fluoride is a naturally-occurring mineral that strengthens enamel and protects the teeth against decay. Your dentist can apply fluoride at the dental office, and you can brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride can also be added to public drinking water supplies to reduce cavities as a public health measure.

Dr. Popple and our dental team offer fluoride treatments to patients who would like extra help fighting cavities and keeping their teeth as healthy as possible.

The Importance of Excellent Oral Hygiene

Oral hygiene is essential to the long-term health and wellness of your teeth and gums. Practicing good dental health habits have significant benefits, such as:

  • Prevents gum disease
  • Reduces bad breath
  • Early detection of oral cancer
  • Lower risk of heart disease and diabetes
  • Prevents cavities
  • Offers a chance to check for a bad bite, orthodontic issues, or jaw joint disorders (TMJ)

Though we have several effective solutions to any given dental problem, we agree that the best solution is to take care of your smile from the very beginning.

Preventive Dentistry Technology

Panoramic X-Rays

A panoramic x-ray is a 2-D x-ray used to capture the entire oral cavity in a single image. Panoramic radiography can view the teeth, upper and lower jaws, and surrounding tissues and structures. The panoramic x-ray produces a flat image of the mouth's curved anatomy and shows details of the patient's teeth and bones.

Panoramic radiography can reveal the following dental concerns:

  • Advanced gum disease
  • Cysts in the jaws
  • Jaw tumors
  • Oral cancer
  • Impacted teeth and wisdom teeth
  • Jaw disorders
  • Sinusitis

Intraoral Cameras

An intraoral camera is a tiny digital camera Dr. Popple uses to capture images in hard-to-reach areas of the mouth. The camera looks similar to a writing pen. It allows Dr. Popple to see detailed, enlarged views of teeth surfaces, gum conditions, oral tissues, cavity-prone areas, and other details. We can also use an intraoral camera to see corroded or worn fillings, dental fractures, plaque, and more in real-time while the patient is comfortably seated in the dental chair.

Digital Sensors

A digital sensor is a small device your dentist uses to capture intraoral x-ray images. Instead of wearing a heavy protective vest and sitting in a giant machine, patients can simply remain relaxed in their exam chair while Dr. Popple uses the sensor. Digital sensors are designed for patient comfort and precision, and they only require being in the mouth for a few seconds at a time.

Once your dentist captures the images, they are ready for immediate viewing on the computer screen or TV monitor. Not only can we quickly view these images, but we can also alter the size and magnification for patient education. We store these digital images in the patient's confidential file and can be easily shared with other doctors or insurance if needed.
